How you can help raise awareness of self-injury

It's actually pretty easy to become part of NSIAD and help raise awareness by providing accurate information about the nature of self-injury. You can even remain anonymous if you like; it's up to you. A few ways to join in:

  1. Sign up here. Even better, sign up and apply for a committee position.

  2. Pick out some hospitals, schools, crisis lines, and other places in your community who would be good targets for information.

  3. Download the fact sheet, bill of rights, quotes, strategies for stopping, press release, brochure, and other official NSIAD documents.
  4. Use the sample letter to mayors as a guideline to request the proclamation of March 1st as Self-Injury Awareness Day in your town, surrounding communities, and your state/province.

  5. Make photocopies of the materials.

  6. Put together a press kit for each local media outlet you intend to contact.

  7. Put together a bundle of fact sheets and brochures for the institutions you intend to contact.

  8. Either distribute the information on the 1st or snailmail it to arrive on the 1st -- contact me if you want to do this anonymously.

  9. Plan events at your college or school if you can. Keep up with the SIAD bulletin board to trade ideas and find people to hook up with.

  10. Locate your regional coordinator and keep him or her up to date with your plans.

  11. Before the end of November, NSIAD 2002 T-shirts and coffe mugs will be available at cafepress.

In years past, people have made business cards as well, using their printers. A sample card:
